Hartford Courant - We Need To Change System, Not Re-Elect Courtney

Op-Ed

Date: Oct. 21, 2014

By Bill Clyde

In response to the editorial endorsing Joe Courtney for re-election to Congress in the 2nd District [Oct. 21, "Courtney Is Bringing Jobs"]: Joe Courtney is a reasonable guy and he has learned to work well in the current system. He speaks of the prominent role he is playing, and of the money he has been bringing back to us from Washington.

The problem is that right now, we don't need someone to go "work the system" for us. We need someone to fix our government. It's broken. It's not working. Polls say 90 percent of us know that. And we can't be satisfied by someone who is just working well in the current system, playing by the same old rules. We need someone committed to doing something completely different -- to changing things so that we have a government that will serve us.

I am committed to that change. It is the only reason I am running. I have a long record of building things that "couldn't be built," fixing things that "couldn't be fixed" and transforming organizational cultures. I will work creatively and relentlessly to help change Washington. We can do this.

No one will be elected without our votes. We have the authority -- and the responsibility -- to take back our government. I know we can do that.
